Description of Belfast Zoo

Welcome to Belfast Zoo

We are located in north Belfast, and are the city´s top fee paying attraction. Our 55 acre site, situated on Cave Hill with excellent views over Belfast Lough, is home to more than 1,000 animals and 150 different species.

Most of our animals are in danger in their natural habitat, and we carry out important conservation work as well as taking part in European and International breeding programmes. This helps ensure the survival of many species that are under threat.

As well as help protect and conserve our animals, we also want to educate our visitors about them, and promote a fun environment for learning and discovery.

We aim to:

  • provide the best possible care for our animals
  • organise campaigns and raise funds for endangered species and their natural habitats
  • take part in European and international breeding programmes which help protect endangered species
  • raise awareness of conservation and biodiversity
  • deliver high-quality environmental education, training and research

Highlights of our zoo include:

  • Our Bird Park
  • Giraffe and Elephant Enclosure
  • Rainforest House
  • A lake
  • Plants and gardens
