Tips if you are going to do Windsurfing in United Kingdom
Scott Iman Jones posted on 15 June 2021 17:31 | Reading time: 4 Minutes
Windsurfing truly is a sport like no other; think riding the waves with the power of the wind on your side, reaching higher speeds and getting more air time than ever, with only the breeze and the sea to worry about. If you ask any windsurfer why they love their sport, they could go on for 20 minutes giving you examples of why it’s the best – that’s why we’ve compiled all these reasons into our top 5, helping you realise why you should try windsurfing in the UK.
1. Total escape
Whilst you’re out on the waves, anything can happen at any time, and so it requires you to be fully involved in the moment. You need to be aware of all of your movements, and really focus on total body engagement; between the feel of the board to the pull of the sail. There’s no chances to worry about the week just gone, or the week ahead, it’s just you, the air and the sea. Complete freedom. Complete escape.
2. Every time is unique
Due to the nature of the sport, the best conditions necessary are those with a lot of wind, and a lot of waves. Therefore, your time out at sea will be completely unpredictable. One moment you'll be paddling, waiting for a breeze, and the next – full speed ahead. It’s not only every trip that will be unique, but every hour windsurfing can be completely different from the last. You are absolutely guaranteed to never be bored! What’s more, once you’ve nailed the basics there will always be new tricks for you to learn! There’s never a dreary moment whilst you’re out windsurfing.
3. Complete full body workout
Some sports focus on endurance, and others strength, but windsurfing combines both of these into the ultimate full body workout. Having to control the sail whilst keeping balance on the board, adapting your body position to the waves, sculpts your core, arms, back and shoulders – whilst also improving upon your sense of balance. And with most windsurfing sessions lasting hours at a time, you’ll be heavily increasing your body’s endurance level as well. (Furthermore, if you’re just starting out you’ll be off-and-on the board multiple times, which also takes a toll!). All in all, you’re going to get fit and healthy if you take up windsurfing – and enjoy every moment whilst you do it!
4. Anyone can learn
Windsurfing is easy. That’s probably not something you expected to hear – but it’s true! It’s a perfect sport to pick up because you can choose the ideal learning environment; going to an area with flat water and light constant winds is a great way to get initiated. Then, once you’re ready you’ll go out onto the main event, being able to enjoy it to the fullest extent. The best part is that you see immediate results, usually people are out sailing by themselves in a couple of hours!
5. Get more confidence!
Whilst starting out windsurfing is easy, becoming proficient takes a lot of practice – however, from the moment you learn how to stay on the board, your confidence will skyrocket. The more you windsurf, the more your confidence builds, as you realise you’re able to do something most people only dream of! So what are you waiting for?
When should I go windsurfing in the UK?
Getting a good windsurfing session in relies heavily on getting the perfect conditions regarding the wind and water. You need a fair amount of wind, but the temperature doesn’t really matter (as long as you don’t mind the cold!), but luckily for you the UK has almost the perfect climate during the on-season to give you a good time! There are plenty of centres all across the UK, and we’d recommend going in the summer/autumn for the best results!
