The region of Yorkshire and the Humber covers the historical Ridings of Yorkshire as well as parts of Lincolnshire. It’s a part of the country that boasts both urban and natural landscapes, with cities of Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford and Kingston upon Hull giving way to National Parks like the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors, and the North Sea coastline. You’ll see the whole lot laid out underneath you when you leave the plane and start accelerating downwards. Where to go skydiving in Yorkshire and the Humber?

• Bridlington: This town is on the shore of the North Sea, next to the beautiful white cliffs of the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast. In one direction, the ocean stretches away from you with nothing to stop it until the coast of Scandinavia, in the other, the land rises up to the Yorkshire Moors and Yorkshire Dales. It’s a mesmerising panorama, but you can’t let yourself get too distracted from the task at hand - getting safely back to the drop zone! The activity takes place at the Bridlington airfield.

• Hibaldstow: On the other bank of the Humber Estuary, the Second World War airfield at Hibaldstow is a great place to do a skydive. The iconic Humber Bridge never looks so good as it does from high up in the sky, and with Kingston upon Hull and the Yorkshire coast stretching away to the north it’s enough to make your eyes water - or is that the wind in your face? It’s hard to tell when you’re in freefall, but what’s certain is that this is an emotional roller coaster that leaves you dosed up on endorphins for hours after landing.

What are the options for organising your experience?

- The most common way to experience it for the first time is with a tandem jump. This means that you’ll be strapped to a seasoned instructor, who’ll take control of every step of the experience. You don’t have to worry about safety, opening and operating the parachute, or anything else when you do a tandem jump, you just focus on the thrills. In both of Yorkshire and the Humber’s drop zones you can jump from 10,000 feet, but in Bridlington you have the option of pumping up the adrenaline with a jump from 15,000 feet. A charity jump to raise money for a good cause will be a tandem jump. There are two ways of organising the jump: either you pay for a normal jump and raise money separately, or you work with one of the skydiving centres’ partner charities and jump for free, provided you’ve collected a minimum amount of donations.

- If you’ve tried skydiving before, or if you know that a tandem skydive won’t be enough for you, why not become a certified daredevil by taking an AFF course. AFF stands for Advanced FreeFall, and is the name of the training programme for skydiving in the UK. You can get Level 1 status on a 2 day course, which includes some studying and training at ground level before you make your first solo jump, accompanied by 2 skydive instructors. Then continue your training at both the drop zones, to earn the right to complete solo jumps anywhere in the world.

- There is a way to experience a solo jump without going through the training process - Static Line skydives can be arranged in Hibaldstow. These involve jumping from a plane with a cord connecting you to the plane, which triggers the parachute to open at the correct time. To complete this type of jump, you also need to go to ground school for a day, and the jump will take place from 4,000 feet.

Can you take photos during the session?

You’re not allowed to take a camera with you on a skydive - and you wouldn’t want to either. But if you don’t trust yourself to retain a clear memory of this highly intense experience, you can purchase an additional media package that contains photos and videos of the jump. Your skydiving instructor will double up as a camera operator, getting shots of you and the landscape of Yorkshire and the Humber during freefall and the parachute descent. You can even arrange for another skydiver to accompany you, filming the experience from the moment you step out of the plane to the moment you land from the air.

Requirements to do this activity

If you're going to throw yourself through the open door of a plane and fall towards the Earth, you need to understand the procedures in place and the risk factors. For that reason, you have to be at least 16 years old to experience it. There are also some size guidelines in place to make sure that your jump is safe. The weight limit is 15 stone or 95 kilograms, or, in certain cases, 100 kilograms. In order for the parachute to work properly, your weight should be in proportion to your height, though there are no maximum or minimum height limits.
