Ruby Country is an area of rural west Devon squeezed between Dartmoor, Exmoor and the north coasts of Devon and Cornwall. Ride the Ruby Country is a joint project led by Ruby Country Partnership to develop and publish horse riding, walking and cycling routes of the local area.

Bring your horse on holiday with you, hike through the beautiful countryside or cycle through the area. A great place to take your family or that special someone, or even just yourself for a beautiful and relaxing trip. With places for camping, bed and breakfasts and more, Ruby Country has everything that you need.

Description of Ruby Country Horse Riding

Ruby Country is a great place to bring your horse on holiday for a ride. If you are looking to discover new places and environments to ride with your own horse, Ruby Country is the place to do it. Working with local places, there are now over eight different places where you and your horse can both stay.

With 6 great trails that you can discover-

  • Village and Forest Trail – A 10.2 mile trail starting and finishing in the same place.
  • Along the Pegasus Way – A 9.2 mile trail where you will be able to see beautiful views of Dartmoor.
  • Railways and Woodlands – A 10.2 mile trail starting in Northtown Cross, and including part of the Tarka Trail.
  • Village and Lakeside Trail – Starting east of Roadford Lake, this 12 mile trail takes in the pretty Bratton Clovelly.
  • Bratton Clovelly and Boasley Cross – Starting and finishing in Bratton Clovelly, this 7.6 mile trail takes place in fabulous countryside.
  • Moorland Trail – An 8.7 mile ride out to Dartmoor.

Description of Ruby Country Hiking

Walking in Ruby Country is a popular activity.  A new series of walks can be discovered that allow you to  explore the towns, villages and countryside of Ruby Country. The only way to truly discover the landscape, its nature and heritage is to leave the car behind and do something healthy for free.

There are many routes that you can take. A selection are;

  • Bratton Clovelly and Boasley Walk - A 6.7 mile walk on country lanes, tracks and footpaths across fields.  
  • Highampton and Burdon Grange Walk – A 3 ¼ mile walk starting from Windmill Cross and using part of Ruby Way.
  • Cookworthy Forest and Halwill Walk – A 6 mile walk on mostly hard surfaces in working woodland.
  • Pyworthy and Crinacott Walk - A 5 mile walk on quiet lanes, tracks and fields.
  • Sampford Courtenay Walk – A 3 mile work to Sampford Courtenay just outside of Exbourne.
