Welcome to Peak Outdoor Canoeing. You can choose to complete 1 of 2 canoeing courses with us.
Introduction to Canoeing: Getting afloat
Canoeing is a great way of exploring the lakes, rivers and canal systems throughout the UK. This peaceful of sports used to be one of the primary modes of transport in North America and the Amazonian basins. Your instructor will explore modern techniques with up to date equipment allowing you to gain skills very similar to those used when canoeing was invented!
The day can divided with a break on the lake side or river bank and with the opportunity for further discussion on skills learned to be be covered in the afternoon session! We will do our best to select a suitable location for the prevailing conditions; please bear in mind the UK’s unpredictable weather!
Advanced Canoeing: Moving water
With the basic strokes practiced it’s time to polish them on one of the Peak District’s many picturesque flat water venues, before moving onto one of the more gentle rivers it has to offer! We try to fit any practice mastering the various strokes into a journey around a lake, along a canal or down a river so that you don´t get bored. Once again lunch breaks can be tailored to the groups needs with options for picnics or even country pub stops!
Under the supervision of expert canoe instructors we’ll explore the transition from flat water canoeing to that of moving water! On the journey we’ll cover aspects of forward and backward paddling, turning and stopping, support strokes and also what to do if things go a little wrong!
