Are you looking for an exhilarating experience, in the air and on the water, that is unlike anything else you would’ve experience before? Then kitesurfing is definitely for you. This amazing sport is a unique hybrid of surfing and paragliding, allowing you to test your limits and learn new skills – all whilst having the time of your life. If you want to know more, here are our top 5 reasons why you should try kitesurfing in the UK!
1. Clear your mind
The calming motion of the waves, the sea breeze guiding you forward and the freshness of the air surrounding you… the unity of water and wind brings you an unparalleled feeling of tranquillity and relaxation. Your everyday worries are soon to disappear as the wind picks up, leading you over the waves as your mind focuses on what’s ahead. There are no worries. There is no stress. Just you, and nature. We have no doubt that you’ll be able to forget the world exists during a kitesurfing session; and once it’s over, you’ll be able to truly enjoy the end of the day, as you look forward to the next.
2. Tone your body and improve your health
You use your whole body whilst kitesurfing – your core stays tight to keep your balance, your legs work to provide a stable foundation, and your upper body controls your speed and direction. This full-body workout will be the easiest you’ve ever done in your life; as you won’t even feel like you’re exercising. If you want a way to tone your muscles without even thinking about it, then this is the sport for you! Not only will the endorphins make you feel good within yourself, but your self-confidence is bound to make a leap too!
3. Enjoy the fresh air
Spend some quality time enveloped in nature when you go kitesurfing. Living in urban areas can take a toll on one’s mental and physical health – and there’s no better remedy than a couple of days breathing in the freshest air you can possibly imagine and being out on the water. Let kitesurfing remind you that nature holds the most wonderful beauty in this world and cultivate your respect for the environment around us.
4. Anyone can learn
Whilst kitesurfing can seem like an incredibly complex sport where the most minute of details can derail you, that couldn’t be further from the truth. As long as you’re keen, and willing to try new things, anyone who tries the sport can do it! You don’t need to be as strong as a weightlifter to control the kite or have the dexterity of Tony Hawk; you just have to steer it with your hands and let the wind guide you. People of all ages, genders, heights and fitness levels can learn – so why shouldn’t you?
5. The sky is (not) the limit
Kitesurfing not only lets you ride the waves, it also allows you to fly! There’s nothing quite like the feeling of weightlessness you get when you’re flying – the feelings of endless freedom and joy it brings are simply unmatched. But you also get a choice. You can choose to follow the motion of the ocean waves, surf up and down with a view or do some insane freestyle tricks high up in the air; there’s so much diversity with kitesurfing and the possibilities – just like your limits – are endless!
When should I go kitesurfing in the UK?
Kitesurfing is very much dependent on the weather conditions – if you want to enjoy it to the fullest it’s best to plan your trip around the best conditions possible. Wind conditions, tide conditions and temperature are the most important aspects of doing the sport. They can affect how well you fly, the size of the waves for surfing, with the temperature of the water affecting how much you want to be in it! But furthermore, the air temperature also plays a part in the wind conditions and how you feel out of the water. For the casual/beginner kitesurf practitioner we would suggest going in the late summer/early autumn, when the temperature is not too hot and the wind isn’t too strong. However, if you’re an experience kitesurf enthusiast you can also go in the winter to catch those big waves and practice your freestyling! There’s really a time for everyone!
