Limavady is a small market town in a charming rural area of Northern Ireland. What can you see on a horse ride in Limavady?

• Beach: less than 10 miles North of Limavady lie a string of wild Atlantic beaches. Sunsoaked in the Summer and windswept and the Winter these sandy expanses backed by rocks and cliffs are an enchanting spot. We’re not the only ones who think so: The producers of Game of Thrones chose the headlands around Downhill Strand as the setting for the fantasy island of Dragonstone. Get lost in an adventure of your own on a horseback ride across on the sand and in the surf, or ride along the clifftops and imagine yourself in a faraway land, free from the routines of normal life.

• Forest: woodland hugs the banks of the River Roe and other areas around Limavady. The soft leafy floor and tranquillity of the trees make riding through forests a favourite for both horses and their riders. Breathe in the clean air, listen to the sounds of leaves and water, and keep an eye open for wild flowers and mushrooms that grow amongst the roots of ancient trees, this is an experience for all the senses.

• Countryside: this part of Northern Ireland is rural and unspoilt. Horse trekking trails lead in all directions, including towards Binevenagh Mountain, a rugged peak that offers views across Lough Foyle and beyond, to Donegal and the Atlantic Ocean. This is a stunning background for a trek on horseback directly from the stables, and is a chance to learn some new skills such as steering, trotting and instructing your horse.

• Seasonal Variety: the scenery of this region changes with the seasons. As equestrian activities take place in open air, the experience that you have will be determined by how best to make the most of the conditions of each time of year. For some of the year, you can arrange to go on a sunset horse ride, while at other times, the flora and fauna might be the highlight of your trip.

How long does this experience last?

Your experience can be so much more than just a ride. Depending on your preference and level you can take part in a grooming session at the stables with the horse that you will ride. Grooming is the practice of cleaning this animals, but it’s also a bonding experience between horse and rider, and a great time to learn about and get to know these wonderful mammals.

If it’s your first time in the saddle you might then have a short lesson in the grounds of the stable, learning how to mount a horse and the basics of controlling it, before setting off cross country on a hack. Those with experience in the saddle can make a start sooner and might have the opportunity to see more of the surrounding area. Transport in a horse box is necessary for some horse trekking routes, and this journey will also be included in the duration of the experience.

If you want to make more of a day of it you can choose a package which includes a picnic. Your guide will stop your trek in the perfect rest point to enjoy a good meal and scenic view, and the horses will almost certainly take advantage of the rest to graze on some good Irish grass too. With all these variables in mind, your horse riding experience can last as long as 3 hours, especially for longer routes taking you up to the coast North of Limavady, or just 30 minutes for a quick escape into the world of horseriding.

The stables have sensory experience sessions for those unable to ride on a horse but want to form a bond with these gentle creatures, while the staff will work with people with other kinds of disabilities to see the possibility of guided rides, stable tours, or other equestrian experiences. These can be tailored to children or adults, and groups of individuals.
