Aretha Franklin used to sing ain't no mountain high enough, but maybe she didn't know the Highland in Cougie, a remote town in Scotland. Located in the county of Inverness, which name can give you a clue about how cold and far we are from cities and skyscrapers, Highland has always been the perfect place for trekking and trail riding. That's exactly why we, Highland Trekking and Trail Riding, were born.
Surrounded by mountains and virgin natural areas, we dare you to take part in an uncommon activity for most people, but loved by those who try it! Trekking means returning to Mother Nature and connecting with it through paths, routes and places where it's not easy to go in our everyday life and where noise and crowded spaces leave room for natural beauty to enjoy and value them as many generations before us did.
Cougie means "beautiful place" and that's what we offer: an experience in a place that will make you feel at peace while riding from lower to higher levels depending on your spirit and adventure needs. The horses that are waiting here for you are calming animals and they have been in contact with the people from the mountains for so long now that they love them and are so easy-going with humans, so they will definitely make you feel safe and secure all the time.
In addition, Highland in Cougie has a great and vast diversity of creatures and species. Did you know that there are hens running around that kids may enjoy feeding or butterflies as beautiful as the ones painted by artist Vincent van Gogh in 1889?
What else do you need to know before trying this life-changing experience? First, that it's not a touristic zone, so you will enjoy your ride without noise (we recommend this activity for one person to 14 people maximum, with a minimum age of 4 and a weight limit of 88 kilograms) or have hot drinks and meals in the well-equipped picnic area that we can find here and use to rest or charge our strength before coming down. Second of all, there are a few pieces of advice that we want you to remember as well. For instance, as the remote village that we are, roads are rural, so your last 20-minutes of trip may be a little slower than the rest. Don't worry! You just need to slow down your speed and enjoy the view! Also, you should know that you must wear warm clothes and we always say that boots with heels are the best shoes to pick up to come and raincoats are good allies too! The rest of the equipment is provided by Iain Pocock, owner of our company and a true lover of horses and Cougie, and the rest of the team.
