The slam of a door, the turn of a key, and clanking of chains…
Feel like you’ve been locked up? You can explore the darker side of Belfast’s past by visiting the Crumlin Road Gaol. This Victorian prison, the only surviving example in the country, has been converted into a museum and events venue that tells the story of Northern Ireland from a unique perspective.
The lockup was in use for 150 years, from 1846 to 1996, with 25,000 prisoners (including men, women and children) passing through its gates in that time. As well as bearing witness to painful moments in the history of Belfast, including the intercommunal conflicts of the Troubles, this was also the scene of great acts of compassion and humanity.
A visit to the museum takes from the imposing gatehouse to the cell blocks, the Condemned Cell to the Hangman’s Cell, and the tunnel that links the jail to the courthouse on the other side of the road to the facility’s very own graveyard. You can take a guided tour on certain days, or opt for a self-guided visit using one of our headsets which offer interpretation in 8 languages.
To bring a bit of life back to this storied place, we have a regular programme of live events including music (Live at the Crum), tribute acts and drag shows. Then there are one off events, such as theatre, and seasonal celebrations. No prizes for guessing that the Halloween events are some of the most popular!
