If you’re looking for something to break up your routine, shake you out of the same old habits and wake up your sense of adventure, there’s nothing like a bungee jump. Climbing up to a dizzying height and plummeting back down is about as far from the everyday, as out of the ordinary, as it’s possible to go, and it’s guaranteed to get the adrenaline flowing through your body like nothing else. And what could be a better place to do this than the real life fantasy land of Northern Ireland. Producers of the hugely popular Game of Thrones series were drawn to this part of the UK for its breathtaking landscapes, modern filmmaking facilities and deep connections and deep connection with myths and legends. It’s the perfect place to create an epic story of your own.

The venue is located in the birthplace of a genuine legend. The modern day bungee platform is supported by a crane that sits on Queen’s Quay in Belfast historic docklands, which is where the RMS Titanic was built. To make one thing absolutely clear, this geographical coincidence is the only connection between the installation and the most notorious ship in history. What kinds of jumps can you complete in Northern Ireland?

The installation is a crane platform. This structure towers into the sky above the River Lagan and raises a bungee platform to the vertigo-inducing height of 160 feet, that’s 50 metres. While providing an unequalled, 360º panorama of the Belfast skyline in one direction and the Irish Sea in the other, you might struggle to take advantage of it because you’ll be on the cusp of completing an aerial stunt that will make your name go down in history. But which will it be?

• Tandem jump: The old saying goes “a problem shared is a problem halved,” but a more accurate description of a tandem bungee jump is “an adventure shared is an adventure doubled!” For this jump, you’ll need a partner. They’ll be strapped to you and you’ll jump from the platform together, connected to the same bungee cord. The tandem experience is a double edged sword - on the one hand, you have someone to keep you company throughout the jump, but on the other, their extra weight means that you’ll fall extra fast and bounce extra high at the end of the cable.

• Individual jump: This time there’s no one to hold your hand or offer you support, you’ll face off against gravity on your own. To help you triumph, you’ll have a harness at your waist and ankle straps. These ensure that the forces on your body when the bungee cord kicks into action and slows your fall are distributed in an even way, in order to avoid any nasty jolts. That's one less thing to worry about, but your survival instincts will still be going crazy as you stand on the edge of the platform, telling you not to jump. Do you have the determination to silence them and take the leap of faith?

• FAB jump: Most of us have said “I’ll try anything once” at some point, but who’s crazy enough to try a jump twice - on the very same day? This is the prospect of the Front And Back, FAB, jump. After completing one jump, you’ll return to the 50 metre high platform and put on the equipment again. But the second time around, the harness and bungees will be set up in reverse, to allow you to leave the jump platform backwards. That’s right - you’ll be challenged to lean back into the unknown and let gravity do the rest. If this sport is for the adventurous among us, then a FAB jump is for the true daredevils.

Is it safe to do this experience?

This is the kind of sport that you definitely shouldn’t try at home, but we’re not talking about a DIY setup here. Quite the opposite, this is a professional operation, which works under the guidelines and to the standards of the largest bungee jumping organisation in the United Kingdom. The staff are professional and well trained. The equipment, which is high quality and constantly maintained, has a system of builtin redundancy, meaning that in the unlikely event of the failure of one element, the system as a whole remains safe. Finally, as we’ll explain below, only people who meet certain criteria are permitted to jump. Who can complete this activity?

There are some restrictions on participation in extreme activities, all of which are based on safety principles. The first ones relate to the correct use of the equipment. Before you go up to the platform above Queen’s Quay, your jump master will calibrate the cord to your individual weight, to make sure that it stops your descent and supports you correctly. The upper load limit in these cords is 18.9 stone, 120 kilograms, for a single jumper, and 34.2 stone, 217 kilograms, combined weight of a tandem duo. You’ll also need to be able to put on one of the harnesses, which fit waist sizes from 15.7 inches, 40 cm, to 49.2 inches, 125cm.

Finally, the team needs you to consent to participation in this wild stunt. To do that, you need to be over 16 years old. Younger daredevils have their chance to jump here too - if they’re over 14 years of age, they can jump with the permission of their parents.
