Requirements to do this activity

The minimum age for an archer depends on the bow, so the equipment that a range has will determine the minimum age. The ranges at Reeth and Huby cater to children as young as 7, while at the other end of the scale Rufforth has kit that will allow sharpshooting for all of those who are 12 or older.

Unlike ancient bows, carved from a single piece of English oak or yew, the modern bows that you’ll find here have adjustable handles and limbs, offering different poundage, or resistance. This means that you don’t need to be a bodybuilder in order to draw back the bowstring, you just need to work with your instructor to get the right bow for you. Then it’s all about your control and accuracy as you aim at the target and hit the bullseye.

How long does an experience last?

- A standard length for a beginner’s archery session in North Yorkshire is one hour. This will give you time to get used to the equipment, and to enjoy some games and competition with your friends or family - without your arm getting too tired!
