Of course, none of us want actual conflict to come to this part of Northern Ireland, but simulated combat sports are one of the most enjoyable ways to spend some time in the great outdoors, make new friends or strengthen existing bonds, and engage in a bit of escapism. Among paintball, laser tag and other activities, one stands out for its realism and thrill factor - airsoft.

This sport uses life size replicas of real firearms which fire small, lightweight plastic pellets. These weapons combine the convincing design and proper weightiness of real guns with accuracy at distances of up to 100 metres and complete safety. In fact, getting hit by an airsoft pellet is less noticeable than being hit by a paintball. This means that you can immerse yourself in the action without worrying about risk. • Newtownbreda: Just outside the Belfast ring road there’s an airsoft site with a commitment to the enjoyment of their clients, whether their returning veterans or first time recruits. They have top quality equipment, including protective equipment, friendly staff and a well thought out game zone complete with natural and man made obstacles and cover. You might turn up with a look of grim determination on your face, but you’re sure to leave smiling from ear to ear.

• Ballynahinch: One of the best established centres in Northern Ireland is found in the woods and fields outside Drumaness, Ballynahinch. When it comes to safety and excitement, they’ve got you covered. There’s also an unofficial policy of making sure that, though you might be enemies during the skirmish, you’re friends with everyone on site when the game finishes. And trigger happy kids can get in on the action here too, with Nerf Wars. Using foam projectiles, Nerf guns are harmless - but that doesn’t mean it’s not a hell of a lot of fun. On top of airsoft and Nerf Wars, you can get involved in a host of other outdoor activities here, from kayaking to rock climbing, and even bushcraft outdoor survival workshops.

• Downpatrick: You’re spoilt for choice in the County Down, because there’s another fantastic site not far away, near Downpatrick. The fighting takes place over a wide arena , where rough terrain, bush and bog is dotted with outposts, lookout towers and bunkers. You’ll have to use the landscape to your advantage in a series of games that each involves different scenarios and objectives. Will a full frontal attack win the day, or should you choose a stealthy approach? Make the right call, and you’ll emerge victorious!

Options for organising the experience

In general, when you sign up for an airsoft session, you choose between a half day and a full day of simulated combat. On arrival at the site, the session will start with a welcome briefing that includes information about safety and correct procedures, before moving onto information about the games. You’ll take part in a series of games, each of them involving different scenarios and demanding different strategies. Between games you’ll have a chance to reload, restock and relax. Boast to your teammates about your exploits in the previous game, buy some more pellets, or just take it easy waiting for the action to recommence.

When it comes to organising the equipment for an airsoft game, for some people the collection and maintenance of their guns, sights, masks, combat gear and other equipment is one of the most important parts of the hobby. There are specialist dealers in Belfast and County Down where you can kit yourself out with the latest pieces of kit, but don’t worry if this is your first time, or if you’re a casual player - there’s always equipment available to rent on site.

If you’re thinking that your kids might be too young to take part, you might be surprised. As we’ve mentioned, the impact of an airsoft pellet is nothing to worry about. The only way where it could cause problems is if it hits the eye, but arena rules stipulate that everyone wear eye masks at all times. For this reason, youngsters are welcome. In some places, they can start playing from as young as 10 years old. Other sites restrict to 12 years old and up, but children aren’t left out because they can enjoy the excitement of Nerf Wars from just 7 years of age.
